When people take on the challenge of the Kokoda track and experience that initial adversity, normally day 1, they can sometimes become distracted with minor setbacks and disappointments which can be disabling. What we do is help them to first of all define the problem or challenge, and then to prioritize it, if you have a hotspot on your foot, well unless you do something about it straight away it will lead to a blister. If you find the heat a major challenge well we define an effective plan of attack. If you are anxious about the challenge well we also define this and plan accordingly.
When people sign up for the Kokoda track they accept the inevitability of adversity. The challenge remains to be able to believe in yourself. After day 2 the success of the previous day in overcoming the many challenges creates in the person a belief that they are capable of overcoming adversity. After day 3 there is a consistency that has developed that allows the participant to now develop a confidence in their ability to overcome adversity.
Participants learn to believe in themselves. In some cases they draw strength from past experiences of adversity and the successes they have had in overcoming that adversity and is continually reinforced that their resilience is impressive.
The track teaches you to look for the positive. If you want to overcome adversity, then you have to focus on the positive, whether it means the positive aspects of your situation, or the positive results you'll feel if you achieve the successful completion of the Kokoda Track or other in the future. The Track also teaches you to focus on the good things in your life, the things to look forwards to. Often people when struggling, will gain inspiration from the Diggers stories as it is energized by passionate presentations.
One of the great things about doing the track is that it allows you the opportunity to peel back the layers of society. This tends to present people at their most honest, it allows you to understand and acknowledge when you have done something wrong and identify what you have learned from the situation. You learn to reframe mistakes not as failures but as learning opportunities to make sure they are not repeated.
