The lure of the Black Cat

The Black Cat Track is situated between Salamaua and Wau, Morobe Province, it is a forgotten World War 2 track that passes through some of the toughest and most – hazardous terrain in the world. It consists of dangerous river crossings, swamps, cliffs, trees that are fallen, moss covered rocks and dangerous ledges that makes for one of the toughest tracks in PNG and the world.

Evidence of the ferocious fighting with the Japanese invasion is evident. The track is littered with live bombs, ammunition, other war junk including boots and plane wreckages as well as Japanese tunnels and anti – aircraft guns.
There were many soldiers and carriers of WW2 who lost their lives on this treacherous path in 1942 and 1943. This track offers the opportunity to pay your respects and just as importantly it is also about personal challenge.
Today the track is peaceful, tranquil and less travelled. The locals are as hospitable and supportive as they were in 1942.
