Our Spirit Adventures
Important Post Kokoda Trek Information

Hello ,

Congralutations again on your successful completion of the Kokoda Track!

[   ]   Continuing Fitness

As with the preparation phase, where you spend time getting fit to take on the challenge, it is also just as important that you don’t stop exercising upon your return back to Australia. The physical fitness that you develop also creates a feeling of happiness due to the many physiological changes that occur in this state. However, in stopping, this can also lead to a state that we term “Kokoda Blues” where you start to feel down, lose energy and in some cases feel depressed. This is only a temporary situation, but can easily be resolved by continuing to exercise and eat healthy.

With the new found fitness levels gained through participation and completion of the Kokoda Track, it’s a good idea to reset a new goal that is achievable in the short term. Some ideas could be to run a half marathon, to run a full marathon, to do further treks, to cycle, etc

[   ]   Set New Goals

Now is the perfect time to start setting yourself new goals! For many people, completing the Kokoda Track is a once in a lifetime experience, but there are many other opportunities for you to challenge yourself and continue your personal growth and understanding with Our Spirit. If you would like to continue another challenge with Our Spirit, we'll let you know upcoming events that might interest you.  Maybe you might like to consider Camino in Spain or the Black Cat Track.

[   ]   Health Considerations

Malaria

Although the use of preventative drugs (in fact, these mostly suppress the symptoms, rather than prevent the infestation) and insect precautions will have decreased your chances of getting malaria on the Kokoda Track, such measures do not guarantee protection.

Symptoms of malaria include fever, shivering, joint pains, headache, vomiting, convulsions and coma.  Anaemia and jaundice can also occur. Symptoms may begin 10 days to 4 weeks after infection, although they can occur up to a year later.  If you become ill with fever within a year of your Kokoda Trek, it is crucial that you seek immediate medical attention and advise your doctor of the possibility of malaria. DO NOT accept “it’s just a cold or flu” and insist on a blood test to rule out the possibility of malaria.

We also recommend you check out the following website for more information on Malaria:

Trench Foot

If you had the pleasure of having this condition on the track, be aware that all footwear and in particular socks should be treated very carefully and washed thoroughly to prevent any re-occurrences. By now you should well and truly be over this condition, if not please see your doctor. To avoid trench foot and other problems (blisters, etc) on the future bush walks and outdoor adventures, we recommend our specially designed Our Spirit trekking socks.
